Domestic

November 3, 2021: There are currently no COVID-19 restrictions (such as proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test) on flying domestically beyond wearing a mask full-time while in an airport or on a plane.   The only exceptions would be travel to Hawaii or a US possession (Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands) outside the continental US.

The 10 most affordable destinations for fall/winter travel
(origal article appears in website www.realsimple.com on October 8, 2021 written by Lauren Bowman)

1. Atlanta, Georgia – check out the Chriskindl Market in the Buckhead Village District.  Reminiscent of the German Christmas markets in Europe.

2. Charleston, SC – prices fall in winter once the summer tourists leave, while temperatures are often in mid-60's.. Visit the city’s annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival starting February 6.

3. Knights Key, Fla – located in the middle of the Florida Keys.  Same weather as Key West without the prices or crowds

4. Los Angeles, Calif. – budget travelers can take advantage of great deals and smaller crowds while still enjoying mild winter weather

5. Healdsburg, Calif – in Sonoma County, “a wine town with more grapes than glitz”.  Rates are 20% lower in winter

6. Tucson, Ariz. – “350-plus days of sunshine and winter temperatures in the mid 60’s”.  Also, astronomy capital of the world.

7. New York City – go in early December for the holiday feel or in January for biggest savings.  Many of the holiday elements are still there but hotels can go down 50%.

8. Portland, Maine – the locals leave and the tourists stay away so prices are rock bottom.  Enjoy restaurants you wouldn’t dream of getting into over the summer.  Vacation rentals are plentiful and cheap.

9. Nashville, Tenn. – a relatively mild winter, live music and fewer tourists makes Nashville an attractive destination in December and January.

10. Hawaii – Honolulu (on the island of Oahu) is still the most popular destination.  However, the Big Island (Hawaii) and Maui are the driest during the December and January rain season.  Stay away from December 18 to January 2 to get the best flight and hotel rates.  Vaccinated travelers have no restrictions for entering Hawaii.  Unvaccinated travelers must show proof of negative Covid-19 tests or undergo 10-day quarantine.  As of November 2, Hawaii was relaxing many of the local restrictions, such as allowing 100% capacity at outdoor bars and restaurants.  Indoor activity is still restricted to 50% capacity unless a vaccination or testing requirement is in place.  A few hotels now require proof of vaccination for check-in.
